The second Schweppes Photographic Portrait Prize won by German photographer Jens Lucking for Tokyo, a striking portrait of three Japanese school-girls. The £15,000 award was presented at the National Portrait Gallery, London, by fashion designer Matthew Williamson who himself features in the exhibition.
This new annual international photographic portrait competition continues the tradition of the popular and prestigious John Kobal Photographic Portrait Award. The focus remains the same: to celebrate and promote the very best in contemporary portrait photography through a competition that is open to all.
Jens Lucking's portrait of three Tokyo school-girls was selected from the nearly 8,000 photographs submitted. He says of the portrait "The photograph is set up but I didn't want it to appear too posed or fashion-like. Part of my style is to push naturalism a bit, but I still like things to look believable and realistic.
The pictures are on exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery until 20 February, 2005 before it moves to The Lowry, Manchester
1 March - 17 April, 2005.
