The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the UK’s leading gardening charity, has named Amanda D’Arcy from West Sussex as RHS Photographer of the Year.
Amanda D’Arcy was selected for the top competition prize for her striking photograph of Eschscholzia californica, which came first in the Single Plant or Flower category. “This image is unashamedly romantic, and the colours have a seductive freshness,” remarked the judges. “The photographer has been respectful of the subject, but brings great artistry in her approach.”
The 18 prize winning images in the annual RHS Photographic Competition were chosen from over 4,500 entries - more than double the number of entries received in the competition just two years ago.
The competition, which is supported by fine art publisher The Medici Society Ltd, is now thought to be the largest of its kind in the UK, and attracted entries from as far afield as Thailand and the West Indies.
It took the panel of judges two days and a lot of heated discussion to complete the judging. “It has been a very tough decision to make - the quality of entries has been outstanding and the variety of approaches and styles has been fantastic,” said Ian Hodgson, one of the competition judges and editor of RHS magazine The Garden.

Stylingworld.com member, Jason Ingram, won first prize for the category ‘People in the Garden Photograph of the Year’.
