A New MoMA for NY

The Museum of Modern Arts in New York is to reopen its Manhattan site to the public on 20 November 2004, to coincide with its seventy-fifth anniversary, following an extensive renovation which has almost doubled the size of the existing building.

MoMA, the home of the world's preeminent collection of modern and contemporary art has been expanded and architecturally reimagined by Yoshio Taniguchi.

Some of the most prominent features of Taniguchi's redesign include a lobby that connects Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth streets; an atrium that soars 110 feet above street level; and innovative glass curtain walls that provide views of The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden and the vibrant midtown surroundings. The new MoMA features a new gallery devoted to contemporary art and another for new media.

All of the galleries have been constructed to suit the various mediums in the Museumís collection. Building materials as glass, granite, and aluminum add to the buildingís elegance, and natural light plays a greater role than ever before in the visitorís experience.

Taniguchi reintroduces The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden as the heart of the Museum by preserving Philip Johnson's original 1953 design. The architectís plan enlarges the garden and re-establishes the southern terrace, which will become an elegant outdoor patio for the Museumís new restaurant. Views of the garden will now be available from numerous vantage points throughout the Museum.
